The Gift of Thought: Trying on New Perspectives
Have you ever noticed how your experience can change just by thinking about something differently? One moment you feel tight and frustrated, and then something shifts—a new perspective arises—and suddenly, the same situation looks easier, lighter, or even hopeful.
That’s not a coincidence. That’s the design.
Trying on Thought Like Clothing
One of the most freeing insights I’ve had is this: we get to try on different thinking and see how it feels. Like trying on clothes in a fitting room, we can slip into a thought, check the feeling it brings, and decide if we want to keep it or hang it back up.
We’re not stuck with the first thought that shows up. We’re not obligated to live through every thought our mind produces. We have access to a whole range of thinking, and each one comes with a different feeling. When we realize that, we stop feeling so at the mercy of our minds.
A Built-In Feedback System
Every thought comes with a feeling. That feeling helps us know whether a thought is helpful or not. Judgmental, stressful, pressured thinking tends to feel heavy, tight, or urgent. Thought that’s aligned with our deeper wisdom feels clearer, lighter, and more spacious.
This design isn’t random—it’s intelligent. It’s a built-in guidance system. When something feels off, it usually means the thought we’re entertaining is off. Not because it’s wrong or bad, but because it’s not helpful in that moment.
And just like we wouldn’t wear a scratchy sweater all day if we had another option, we can let go of scratchy thoughts and try on something softer.
Freedom to Choose Again
We don’t need to analyze our thinking or figure out where it came from. We just need to notice how it feels—and remember that we have the freedom to choose again. That’s the quiet grace built into the human design. We’re not stuck. We’re free to shift perspective. We’re free to let thought pass. We’re free to wait for a better-feeling thought to come through.
And it will.
New thought is always available. Insight is always possible. The deeper part of our mind, the part that’s connected to life and wisdom and peace, is always quietly waiting for space to emerge.
What a Wonderful Design
The fact that we get to try on different thinking is not just a quirky feature of human psychology—it’s a beautiful part of our design. It allows for growth, healing, creativity, and change. It lets us adjust course. It gives us access to a fuller range of human experience.
We don’t need to be afraid of our thoughts. We don’t need to believe all of them. We just need to listen for the ones that bring us closer to the feelings we want to live in—presence, goodwill, compassion, love. And let the others pass.
It’s a brilliant design.
And it’s working in your favor, always.
